1942년 영국에서 태어난 골딩게이는 영국의 옥스퍼드 대학교(B.A.)와 노팅엄 대학교(Ph.D.)에서 공부하고, 노팅엄 대학교의 세인트존스 칼리지에서 구약을 가르쳤다. 1997년에 미국의 풀러 신학교로 옮겨 데이비드 앨런 허바드 교수로 재직하며 구약을 가르치다가 2018년에 은퇴했고, 은퇴 후에는 고국인 영국으로 돌아가 옥스퍼드에서 살고 있다. 영미 권에서 꾸준히 활동해 온 구약학자답게, 『성경을 만나다』(성서유니온), 『구약성서개론』(CLC), 『WBC 다니엘』(솔로몬) 외에 Old Testament for Everyone 시리즈와 Old Testament Theology 시리즈 등 많은 책을 저술했다.
