퀸스대학(B.A.)을 졸업 후 세인트앤드루스대학에서 근대사로 철학박사(ph.D.)학위를 받았다.
보스턴대학에서 교회사 교수를 역임했고 현재는 하버드대학교 교회사 교수이다.
