2009년 찰스 하지 석좌교수로 은퇴할 때까지 프린스턴 신학교에서 조직신학, 삼위일체론, 기독론, 칼 바르트의 사상 등을 가르쳤다. 프린스턴 대학교에서 석사학위와 박사학위를 받았고 웨스트민스터 신학교에서는 명예박사학위를 받았다. 또한 장로교 목사로서 교회의 현장에서 사역하기도 했다. 대표적인 저서로는 The Power of God and the Gods of Power, Rachel's Cry: Prayer of Lament and Rebirth of Hope(Kathleen D. Billman 공저), Protestant Theology at the Crossroads: How to Face the Crucial Tasks for Theology in the Twenty-First Century(Gerhard Sauter 공저) 등이 있다.
