1966년 하버드 대학교의 학부를 졸업하고 1972년 동 대학원에서 Ph.D 학위를 받았으며, 1975년부터 샌프란시스코 신학대학원(San Francisco Theological Seminary)과 버클리의 신학대학원연합(Graduate Theological Union; GTU)의 구약학 교수를 역임하다가 은퇴하였다. 성서와 고대 중동 분야에서 국제적으로 명성이 높은 학자로서, 주로 이스라엘의 초기역사 및 성서의 형성사를 연구하였다.
