역사학자이며 성경통독 전문가인 통通박사 조병호가 출간한 『성경과 5대 제국』은 ‘세계역사와 성경역사를 통通 ’으로 엮은 책이다. 선행학습으로 다룬 ‘애굽’을 비롯, 본격적으로 앗수르, 바벨론, 페르시아, 헬라, 로마, 5대 제국의 역사를 성경의 역사와 더불어 통通으로 담았다. 영국에서 8년간 유학하며 서구 역사에 관한 인식과 지식을 접하고, 이후 동양의 방법론과 서양의 방법론을 묶어 ‘통’ 방법론을 내어놓은 바 있는 저자의 통찰과 혜안을 엿보게 한다. 또한 이 책은 통通으로 성경과 5대 제국을, 한 권으로 성경과 5대 제국을, 하룻밤에 성경과 5대 제국을 살펴볼 수 있다는 측면에서 큰 장점이 있다. 더불어 저자는 이 책을 통해 제사장 나라와 제국의 이야기를 통으로, 예언서와 역사서를 통으로 보려고 시도했다.

저자는 이 책에서 각 제국들의 제국 경영 키워드를 명쾌하게 제시한다. 애굽의 제국 경영 키워드로는 ‘자연’을, 앗수르의 제국 경영 키워드로는 ‘경계’를, 바벨론, 페르시아, 헬라, 로마의 제국 경영 키워드로는 ‘교육’, ‘숫자’, ‘융합’, ‘관용’을 각각 들었다. 그러나 저자가 이 책을 통해 무엇보다 강조하는 것은 ‘하나님의 세계경영’이다. ‘제국이여, 영원하라’는 구호를 외치던 제국들도 결국은 멸망했다. 자연, 경계, 교육, 숫자, 융합 그리고 관용. 이 모든 것은 인간이 어떻게 마음대로 주무르며 누군가를 지배하는 데 사용되어질 기재들이 아닌, 오히려 이 모든 것은 하나님의 세계경영을 위해 함축된 장치들이라는 것을 저자는 분명히 밝히고 있다.

이를 통해 독자들은 한 개인의 가치가 온 천하보다 소중하게 평가된다는 것과 천하보다 귀하게 평가된 바로 그 개인에게 하나님께서 민족과 국가를 ‘선물’로 주셨다는 사실을 깨닫게 될 것이다. 결론적으로 저자는 이 책을 통해 성경이 개인적, 가정적, 민족적이며 동시에 모든 민족적인 책이라는 것을 드러내고 있다.
