코넬리스 반 담코넬리스 반 담(Cornelis Van Dam) 교수는 1946년에 네덜란드에서 태어났고, 1952년에 부모와 함께 캐나다로 이주하였다. 윌프리드 라우리어 대학(Wilfrid Laurier University)에서 고대 근동학을 전공한 후에 필라델피아에 있는 웨스트민스터 신학교에서 1년 공부하였고(1968-69년), 하밀톤에 소재한 캐나다 개혁교회 신학대학을 졸업하였다(1971). 토론토 대학에서 신학 석사를 받은 후에 네덜란드의 캄펀 신학대학(해방)에서 “우림과 둠밈: 구약 계시에 대한 한 방편에 대한 연구”로 박사 학위를 취득하였다(1986년). 1971년에 목사로 임직된 후에 세 교회에서 목회를 하였고, 1981년부터는 2011년까지 30년 간 캐나다 개혁 신학교(Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary)에서 구약학을 가르쳤다. 그 사이에 캐나다 개혁교회의 기관지인 클래리온(Clarion)의 편집인으로 일하면서 이 잡지와 주요 신학 사전에 수백 편의 글을 기고하였다.
