휘튼 칼리지를 졸업하고 댈러스 신학교와 캘리포니아 대학을 거쳐 애버딘 대학에서 박사학위를 취득했다. 1975-1989년까지 일리노이 주에 있는 트리니티선교신학교에서 구약학과 셈어족을 가르쳤으며 이후 9년간 미국 장로교회 교단에서 사역했다. 현재 테네시주 내슈빌에 있는 임마누엘교회를 섬기면서 'The Gospel Coalition'의 자문위원으로도 활동하고 있다.
