프레더릭 J. 머피(1949-2011)는 하버드 대학교에서 학사(A.B.)와 석사(A.M.) 및 박사학위(Ph.D.)를 받았다. 1983년부터 매사추세츠주 우스터에 있는 홀리크로스 대학 종교학부의 교수로 봉직했으며, 2001년에는 홀리크로스 대학에서 “올해의 교수상”(Distinguished Teacher of the Year)을 수상하기도 했다. 히브리 성경, 신약성경, 제2성전기 유대교, 역사적 예수, 묵시사상 등 다양한 분야의 전문가로서 연구를 계속하던 중 안타깝게도 2011년 62세에 병으로 세상을 떠났다. 저서로 The Religious World of
